The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has announced funding for a feasibility study to develop the Thailand-U.S. Submarine Cable System (THUS), a proposed trusted trans-Pacific submarine cable connecting Thailand to the United States through neighbouring Southeast Asian countries. Thailand’s National Telecom Public Company Limited (NT) has selected APTelecom to conduct the study, assessing the commercial, technical, financial and regulatory viability of the proposed system.
The THUS cable is planned to span up to 11,500 miles and could connect Thailand with the United States through Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam, while avoiding the South China Sea and other routes identified as carrying security risks. APTelecom’s study will include route design, economic analysis, commercialisation planning and regulatory review, helping strengthen the project’s ability to secure financing for implementation.
Designed as an open-access system, THUS aims to expand affordable and reliable connectivity across a regional market of more than 600 million people, while strengthening the resilience and diversity of Thailand’s international networks and supporting the continued growth of its data centre and cloud computing sectors.
